Different Types of Dentures Available
If Dr. Batterton recommends dentures, several types are available, each made from a different material and serving a different purpose. That is why it is essential to know the benefits of the various types when deciding on the best type for you.
In full dentures or complete dentures, all of a patient’s teeth sit on top of the gums, unlike dental bridges anchored to the existing teeth. Usually, complete dentures can be placed within eight to twelve weeks of tooth extraction.
If you are missing only a few teeth, partial dentures are a good replacement option. Unlike complete dentures, these are held in place by a plastic base that matches the color of your gums. Typically, a metal framework is built to hold the base in place and keep it from falling out.
Temporary dentures, also called immediate dentures, can be fitted immediately after your teeth have been extracted. They are an option to help you get by while you wait for your new permanent dentures to be fitted.
Dentures supported by dental implants are known as implant-supported dentures. Implants are attached to a surgically-fixed base that is attached to the jawbone. When Dr. Batterton determines that you are a suitable candidate for dental implants, including having sufficient jawbone, he will choose the type of implant to use.
